Panelist: Mark Sweeney, General Director for Justice and Courts Policy at the Ministry of Justice (*)

Moderator: Miguel Sampol Pucurull, Abogado del Estado, Head of Unit, Spanish Legal Service before the European Court of Justice at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation

Objectives:

- Introduction: Background and context of UK-Spain relations.
- Future civil judicial co-operation mechanisms and procedures between UK in EU for business, individuals and families, and access to dispute resolution.
- Conclusion. We will be working together in the future. Families, business and citizens need to have confidence that we are looking after their interests and that there are clear mechanisms for dispute resolution.

Schedule:The breakfast session will be held from 9.00 to 11.00 am.

(*) Mark Sweeney: Mark took up post as General Director for Justice and Courts Policy at the Ministry of Justice in October 2017. The group is responsible for policy on the civil, family and criminal justice systems; legal aid; victims; human rights, including the UK’s international obligations; international work, including the justice aspects of the UK’s exit from and future relationship with the EU; and relations with the judiciary. Mark was previously Director, Government at Ofcom, the UK’s independent telecommunications and broadcasting regulator. Other roles in Government include Constitution Director at the Cabinet Office responsible for policy on elections and referendums, the UK's constitutional settlement and devolution; Director for Law, Rights and International at the Ministry of Justice; and Principal Private Secretary to Ken Clarke as Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice. He has also worked in the Political Directorate in the Northern Ireland Office, and the Cabinet Secretariat for EU issues.
